The term Bollywood was coined after ‘Bombay,’ the former name of Mumbai. People think of it as a genre or a place akin to Hollywood. Even though most films are produced in Mumbai, it is the utilization of the Hindi language. I have grown up watching Hindi movies and have come to love the actor I perceived as idols in my childhood.
Top 10 Bollywood Movies of all time
Hindi films are generally stereotyped as masala films, full of gravity-defying action sequences and dialogues on which people whistle for. Other films are elegant and timeless. Due to the pandemic, I have had the chance to catch some of the most prominent movies of all time. So, if you want to watch some ageless movies, here are 10 of them.
10. Guide (1965)
‘Guide’ has impacted a lot of lives. The film, directed by Vijay Anand, was adapted from RK Narayan’s English-language novel. It tells the story of Raju, who metamorphoses from a tour guide, a great holy man. ‘Guide’ was said to be ahead of its time as it showed an extra-marital affair between its protagonists. Raju was presented as an immoral scumbag.
9. Gangs of Wasseypur (2012)
Satya introduced the ‘gangster’ phenomenon to Bollywood, but Gangs of Waseeypur exploded the genre. The tale of betrayal and revenge was violently expressed, but it was accepted with open arms by the audience. The sequel was loved even more than the original – a rarity. The dialogues were colloquial, backed by regional music. Gangs of Wasseypur set the gangster epoch.
8. Sholay (1975)
Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay made the action-adventure famous in the 70’s era. It tells the story of two criminals and retired police who form an unlikely bond to destroy a fugitive gangster. The duo tries and fulfills the officer’s mission while finding peace, solace, and love. The song ‘Yeh Dosti’ is still sung by best of friends.
7. Anand (1971)
Rajesh Khanna plays the titular character, who endures a long fight with cancer. The story explores Anand’s relationship with his doctor Bhaskar, played by Amitabh Bachchan. Anand generally has a positive outlook on life, which surprises Bhasker, who is tasked with Anand’s medical condition. Salil Chowdhury ensured that his score would be remembered for years to come.
6. Andhadhun (2018)
Sriram Raghavan made an excellent thriller film with an open ending. Be it the title or the tricky climax. We got to see Ayushmann in a new avatar and the antagonist Tabu, who gave a layered performance. The film reminded us that Hindi films are capable of delivering A-class thrillers. The performances, cinematograph, editing, scriptwriting, and background score were amazing.
5. 3 Idiots (2009)
Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘3 Idiots’ tells a compelling story of a trio who becomes friends in engineering college who pursue their dream jobs. Shot in India’s top engineering university, the coming-of-age story addressed ragging, although in comical form. The movie also focused on the extreme stress to excel in education, student suicides, and the friction between students and their parents. The only offending thing about the film is the comical commentary on rape.
4. Mughal-E-Azam (1960)
Mughal-E-Azam, translated as ‘Emperor of the Mughals’, is set in the late sixteenth century in India’s Mughal period. It tells the doomed story of Prince Saleem, son of the ruling who falls for a dancing slave girl Anarkali. Madhubala showed her acting chops in this significant role. The film is an epic example of filmmaking that boasted majestic sets, detailed costumes, an ageless score, huge battle scenes (with real elephants), and acting on par. The black and white film was colored in 2009.
3. Udaan (2010)
Vikramaditya Motwane made his directorial debut with Udaan, termed as one of the most excellent coming-of-age films. The film revolved around a teen whose teenage angst was addressed, which also took on child abuse. The soundtrack was diverse with heart-wrenching dialogues, brilliant cinematography, and performances that have touched audiences’ and critics’ hearts.
2. Dangal (2016)
Amir Khan has been tagged as a perfectionist, and time and again, he justifies it. Directed Mehboob Khan beautifully portrayed the complexities of rural farming in recently independent India and the exploitation of peasants by their feudal landlords. The film made the word ‘mother’ synonymous with an idealized nation. The audience adulated Nargis’ performance and the storyline. Many say it was a heart-breaking story, but a true one at that.
