The top 10 horror movies of all time that I have listed below are an amalgamation of such elements that make them the best pick for a sleepover with friends or feel brave.

10. A Quiet Place (2018)

IMDb: 7.5/10

A Quiet Place isn’t scary as others on the list, but it does scare you. This movie transmits horror energy through the monsters who have amazing hearing power. The movies play with you and the characters, but it’s amazing to see a movie scare one so much without any sound. It’s truly one of the top 10 horror movies of all time.

9. Scream (1996)

IMDb: 7.2/10

Scream created a sub-genre of slasher flicks with its masked-villain with a knife, which is why it makes its place in this list of the top 10 horror movies of all time. It was spawned by many, into many parodies and sequels. It is scary and funny at the same time. If you haven’t watched any horror movies, Scream might be a good entry point for you.

8. Jaws (1975)

IMDb: 8/10

Many of you are surely wondering why I have included Jaws on this list. Well, this movie made swimmers stay away from the ocean. I think it qualifies as horror when you don’t know a shark will attack your yacht with massive jaws. John Williams’ track makes the movie even more haunting.

7. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

IMDb: 7.5/10

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the top 10 horror movies of all time that gives you a headstart into the nightmare, unlike other horror movies that prefer to build up the scene. The plot is scary – five children have to soldier through a cannibalistic horror. I won’t divulge much, but it still scares the hell out of me.

6. Halloween (1978)

IMDb: 7.8/10

Halloween is a classic horror film that lacks some gore, but the plotline is scarier on its own. Micheal Myers kills his sister as a child and is institutionalized, but he escapes only to kill more people a few years later. The film blends realism and supernatural elements, which is a dangerous combination. Before watching the film, keep in mind that the mask will haunt you.

5. Suspiria (1977)

IMDb: 7.4/10

Dario Argento has made many films, but Suspiria is his well-known creation. The plot follows an American who travels to Germany to visit a ballet academy but later discovers that the school’s witches run. Expect murders and mayhem. Its death scenes are still significant. If you want to watch great horror flicks, Suspiria is haunting, pulsating, and an insane piece of art that is still considered to be one of the top 10 horror movies of all time.

4. Saw (2004)

IMDb: 7.6/10

Saw was referred to as ‘torture porn’ by many. Critics called it cheap and a gory horror product, but James Wan’s creation made its place into a huge list of films that, to date, people are scared of. People are chained to various things, and to escape, they’ll have to follow some instructions. Its sequels follow the same plot but get quite creative in all the gory scenes.

3. The Exorcist (1973)

IMDb: 8/10

The Exorcist is based on William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name. It’s still considered to be one of the scariest films ever made. I watched it a few years ago, and I was glad I watched it with some friends. With ten Academy Award nominations, The Exorcist is one of the films that is recommended to anyone who wants to try the horror genre. It deserves to be one of the top 10 horror movies of all time.

2. Psycho (1960)

IMDb: 8.5/10

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is a classic horror film that set the benchmark for how films of the genre were perceived. This suspenseful movie has a massive following: praising its plot, music, and the actors, who did an unprecedented job. The climax still has me reaching for the pause button.

The film’s film’s music, performance, and unpredictable plot make it one of the top 10 horror movies of all time.
