When we talk or write about pop culture, for some, it just material, and some keep it close to their hearts. I have read the Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series, but my mind is etched in the latter. But, 11 books, 8 movies, 1 play, and many theory forums later, Harry Potter is still the ‘Boy who Lived.!
The character, who lived at 4 Privet Drive, Surrey, endured a lot in the 8 years of his teenage+adult life that gave him a sigh of relief in the second wizarding war. Harry was flabbergasted during his teenage years to find that he’s a wizard, just like his parents, and they were killed by an evil wizard, not in a car crash. Well, if you are a Potterhead, you know the rest.
Harry met various people who helped him achieve things he’d be proud of today. But he had to face various miscreants, enemies, and arch-nemesis, that made his life living hell. That includes his maternal aunt, her husband, and their son – the Dursleys. Poor Harry didn’t know that this was just the start.
Draco Malfoy, his father, Severus Snape, Peter Pettigrew, or Umbridge troubled the innocent boy, but he comes over it. Harry proved that he really is the chosen one. Apart from the names I just mentioned, there are serious villains who not only torture Harry but want him dead. In this list, we are taking a look at the top 10 strongest villains in Harry Potter.

Top 10 Strongest Villains in Harry Potter Ranked
Harry Potter isn’t short of villains, so there aren’t just 10, but these are the most feared characters of the series.
10. Professor Quirinus Quirrell
After being bodyless due to the old magic created by Lilly Potter’s death, Lord Voldemort hunted for possible ways to come back to life and rule the wizarding world. Professor Quirinus Quirrell one of the ways he saw to complete his dream. Occupying Quirrel’s back of the head, Lord Voldemort told him to execute some dirty deeds, such as fetching the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone from the Gringott’s Bank and Harry at the end.
Quirrel looked like he’s just committed a mistake and caught red-handed. His stuttering was just a ruse to guise the real power of Voldemort. His magical abilities are unknown, but he should have opted for a better moisturizer, saving him from Harry’s “love-filled” hands. Professor Quirinus Quirrell will always be known purely as a pawn.
9. Peter Pettigrew
Can a common garden rat live 12 years? According to Google, rats as well-kept pets that live up to 4 years. Wish the Weasley family knew that. Peter Pettigrew was chummy with the Order of the Phoenix but turned his back and joined the dark forces. Many believed him to be dead by the hands of Sirius Black, who only left a finder for his identification.
Pettigrew was one reason the Dark Lord got a second reign, who killed Cedrick Diggory and used Harry’s blood to give a living form to Tom Riddle. Even after Harry gave him mercy from instant killing, he joined Lord Voldemort and did his dirty work. Unfortunately, we never got to saw Peter’s magical abilities, but his role definitely changed the course of the wizarding world.
8. Dolores Umbridge
If hell had another name, then Dolores Umbridge would be it. For those who didn’t read the books, she was the one who sent Dementors after Harry to Little Whinging as she was devoted to the Ministry. Characterized as an organized, cat-loving woman, Dolores made headlines in the wizarding world for taking over Hogwarts as an inquisitor and eventually becoming the Headmistress after Dumbledore ‘escaped’ from the Ministry goons.
She absolutely hated children, which was evident from her mannerisms, especially towards Harry Potter. She made him write ‘I must not tell lies’ after openly saying that Lord Voldemort threatens the wizarding world. Dolores believed it to be Albus’s huge game plan to take over the Ministry. Alas, she was stupefied by Harry in the first part of the Deathly Hallows, and she’s being held in Azkaban since then.
7. Fenrir Greyback
Fenrir Greyback is a Death Eater who is a werewolf. His presence is felt in the Potterverse post the third movie, where we learn he turned Remus Lupin into a werewolf. Fenrir had many goals to achieve in the wizarding world, one of them being infecting as many people with lycanthropy, the werewolf gene.
Greyback even injured Bill Weasley and killed Lavender Brown during the Second Wizarding War. He was known for his raw strength, with which he wanted to build a majestic werewolf army and help Lord Voldemort reign the wizarding world (even the muggle world, perhaps!)
Nagini was known to be a snake who served as Lord Voldemort’s Horcrux. She accompanied him everywhere he went and killed numerous people on her master’s orders, including Severus Snape and Professor Charity Burbage, a Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts. Thanks to the second Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, we find out that Nagini is, in fact, a Maledictus. It means that she was cursed to transform into a beast.
During the initial years, she could control it but remained in serpent form permanently. Neville Longbottom killed her with the sword of Gryffindor. In the Fantastic Beasts 2nd movie, we see Nagini’s skills and strength. The movie shows us that more to Nagini than meets the eye. It would be fun to explore her background in the sequels.
Dementors are foul creatures who live on people’s sad memories. You’ll know when they arrive, as everything becomes cold and life takes a standstill. Their arrival makes people lose hope. Before the Second Wizarding War, Dementors followed Ministry’s orders. They were spotted in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when they board the Hogwarts Express to search for Sirius Black – who was then known to be Voldemort’s accomplice.
They were taken over by Voldemort’s pawns, who eventually became villains. They were next seen in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where Dolores Umbridge sends two of them after Potter. We saw the last of them in the Deathly Hallows Part 2, where Aberforth Dumbledore fights hundreds of Dementors with the Patronus charm.
4. Barty Crouch, Jr.
Barty Crouch, Jr. is an underestimated villain of the Potterverse. He escaped Azkaban with the help of his mother to find Lord Voldemort and bring his reign back into the Wizarding World. He used the Dark mark during the Quidditch World Cup and wreaked havoc. Lord Voldemort assigned him a task, which many think was impossible for him to pull off.
Barty used the Polyjuice Potion to transform into Mad-Eye Moody to set Voldemort’s plan in motion. He submitted Harry’s name in the Goblet of Fire and made the cup a portkey so that he could be led directly to the Dark Lord. His plan succeeded, and Lord Voldemort took his old form with the help of Peter Pettigrew – who sacrificed his hand, his father’s bones, and Harry’s blood. Barty Crouch, Jr. was sent to Azkaban once again after his charade was out in the open.
3. Severus Snape
If it weren’t for Severus Snape, the reign of the Dark Lord would have gone for many more years. Snape heard Sybill Trelawney’s prophecy about a boy who’ll finish Voldemort. Being a loyal death eater, he blabbed it to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and he murdered many in the path, but not little Harry. Those who read the books would know that Severus Snape was a horrible man, but Alan Rickman’s Snape is taciturn and biased to Harry.
Many would protest his name in the list, but for many a year or two, Severus Snape remained a killer in the eyes of the Order of the Phoenix and the not-so-coward Headmaster of Hogwarts. Many, including Lord Voldemort, didn’t know Snape’s true loyalties. Once he realized that Lilly Potter’s family was being hunted, he switched sides and became a double agent for Dumbledore. Still, the things he did earn him this slot.
2. Bellatrix Lestrange
Lord Voldemort’s most ardent follower, Bellatrix Lestrange, is the second-most feared villain in the Potterverse. And rightfully so, as she did some of the cruelest things. To begin with, she used Crucio – one of the three unforgivable curses – on Neville Longbottom’s parents, which made them insane for life. She also killed her cousin, Sirius Black, Harry Potter’s Godfather, and the only family.
She was jailed in Azkaban until Voldemort rescued her at the start of the Second Wizarding War. Coming from a line of the pure-blood wizarding family, she shared a similar vision to that of Lord Voldemort – making the wizarding world free of muggles and ruling it alongside her master. She was killed by Molly Weasley; the same Lord Voldemort was killed by Harry Potter.
1. Lord Voldemort
No surprises there, I guess! The Dark Lord, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Lord Voldemort, Tom Marvolo Riddle – all being one person, is the strongest villain of the Harry Potter series. The Half-Blood boy was always known to be weird. His father was in the marriage because of a love potion, and when the mother died, Tom was left to be an orphan, when he gradually began to terms with his powers.
Being the heir of Salazar Slytherin, he had the quality of being biased and wanted to rid the world of muggles, who he thought were unfit for the magical society. So he started putting plans into motion in Hogwarts, exploring dark magic and eventually splitting his souls in 6 Horcruxes, which made him inevitable. His powers rivaled that of Albus Dumbledore, and were the most feared wizard. So Harry Potter avenged his parents and others by killing him in the Second Wizarding War.

Over and out!
These are the top 10 strongest villains in Harry Potter ranked. As I’ve mentioned earlier, there are many other enemies that Harry faced. Not all villains are equal; some are extremely powerful while others only fear their association with the powerful (Hey, Malfoys!) I personally adore Severus Snape. His story moves in every way – a double agent, a true lover, and the one who unwillingly sacrifices himself for his love.
